Pantera Capital and Hack VC-backed blockchain venture studio Thesis has unveiled its mainnet for Bitcoin's second-layer network Mezo.

According to an email sent to CoinDesk, Mezo was designed as a Bitcoin financial platform that allows users to profit from BTC and thereby become their own bankers.

The project launched a testnet last year after a successful $21 million funding round led by Pantera.

Users can use their BTC as collateral to mint and spend Mezo's native stablecoin MUSD, thus creating a BTC-based circular economy.

One of the persistent obstacles to wider adoption of Bitcoin is the caution of users in selling or spending it, which may be due to fears of losing the value invested in their assets. This, along with a host of other factors, may explain why Bitcoin has not yet fully proven itself as a form of money beyond a store of value.

“There aren’t many options for owners to use their bitcoins without giving them up,” said Thesis CEO Matt Luongo.

“With [Mezo], I can park my BTC, access a line of credit, and live my life. This is what owning your own bank should always be like. Finally, it allows HODLers to have their cake and eat it too.”

Mezo has teamed up with a number of crypto platforms offering use cases such as online marketplace Bitrefill, which offers gift cards for MUSD, and financial app BTC Fold (FLD), which provides a cashback debit card and pays out rewards in Bitcoin.
