Riot Platforms Taps Data Center Veteran to Expand Beyond Bitcoin Mining | INFbusiness

Riot Platforms (RIOT) has hired industry veteran Jonathan Gibbs as its chief data center officer, a strategic move for the bitcoin miner as it looks to expand its horizons beyond cryptocurrency into the broader business data infrastructure sector.

Gibbs has more than 15 years of experience and his resume includes designing and building over one gigawatt of data center capacity in North America, Europe, and Asia. Most recently, he served as executive vice president of Prime Data Centers, where he coordinated projects across the United States.

Now he's been tasked with launching Riot's new data center platform, which is aimed at companies that need significant computing power to support cloud services and artificial intelligence. The company plans to build non-bitcoin facilities using the 1.7 gigawatts of power it has at its disposal.

CEO Jason Les said the new initiative will “scale aggressively” to meet growing demand. If successful, Riot could join a growing list of former mining companies repositioning themselves as key players in the development of AI and cloud infrastructure.
