Solana co-founder criticizes Layer 2 risks in Ethereum | INFbusiness

  • Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has criticized the security and decentralization of Ethereum's Layer 2 scaling solutions. In a post on X, he called the assumption that L2 networks automatically inherit the security of the Ethereum blockchain “false.”
  • “The promise of Layer 2s doesn't match the reality of Layer 2s,” says Yakovenko. “The complexity and attack surface of the code required for a full-fledged L2 solution is so large that it's impossible to guarantee absolute error-free performance and full functionality.”
  • In his view, many of these networks only appear to offer the same security as the Ethereum mainnet, but actually exhibit several vulnerabilities. All Layer 2 networks, he claims, have a so-called upgrade multisig, which, according to the Solana co-founder, “effectively negates all security guarantees.”
  • The Layer 2 ecosystem, especially around Ethereum, has grown significantly in recent months. According to data from L2Beat, there are currently 129 Ethereum Layer 2s.
  • Some industry voices consider the rapid increase in such projects to be exaggerated and assume that far more networks currently exist than are actually needed. Other observers, however, view the development positively: The growing number of scaling solutions could broaden the Ethereum ecosystem in the long term and ensure greater technical diversity.
