Solana network breaks record – with a catch

- The Solana network gave a taste of its resilience over the weekend. As Mert Mumtaz, co-founder of the Solana developer tool Helius, announced on X on Sunday, the network reached a number of over 100,000 transactions per second (TPS).
- According to Mumtaz, this milestone has now been reached for the first time by Solana, albeit with limitations. Most of the transactions were not token transfers, but rather so-called “noop” (no-operation) instructions, which do not perform any state changes. Therefore, the value only partially reflects the potential utilization under normal conditions.
- However, as the Solana developer further notes, “it could be concluded that theoretically around 80-100,000 TPS are also possible for transfers, oracle updates, and similar [operations].”
- Although testnets and simulations theoretically describe Solana as one of the fastest blockchains, in practice, throughput is significantly lower than such peak values. Data from the block explorer Solscan shows a TPS value of currently around 3,600. However, this includes blockchain votes. Excluding these, the number of transactions per second is just over 1,000.
