Binance CEO warns of scammers

Binance CEO warns of scammers | INFbusiness

Richard Teng, CEO of the world's largest crypto exchange, Binance, spoke about scammers who contact the exchange's clients by phone, posing as Binance employees. The goal is to gain access to accounts and steal cryptocurrency.

According to Richard Tang, scammers posing as customer support staff convince exchange clients to change API settings (the mechanisms that allow two software components to communicate with each other). The attackers cite the need to perform a “routine security update.” Once the attackers gain access to accounts, they transfer all funds to their own crypto wallets.

Binance employees do not request passwords or other sensitive data over the phone, the CEO assured. If any suspicious activity is detected, clients should contact the platform's official support channels, Teng advised.

Binance considers two-factor authentication and Passkey (an authentication method that allows users to log into apps and websites using a fingerprint, facial recognition, or device PIN) to be the most effective fraud protection measures. Binance recommends that clients immediately revoke all API keys and temporarily suspend their accounts after receiving a suspicious phone call.

Earlier, experts from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike reported that the new Shamos malware, created by the hacker group COOKIE SPIDER, is stealing crypto wallet data from macOS devices.
