Coinbase Reveals Exact Number of Stolen User Data
Coinbase said a December 2024 data breach exposed the data of 69,461 users, the company said in a notice to Maine authorities.
The hackers demanded $20 million, threatening to publish the stolen information on the dark web. They bribed support staff abroad to gain access to system data.
Coinbase clarified that the incident affected less than 1% of active users. The leaked data included name, address, and email (KYC information), but did not affect passwords, private keys, or account funds.
The exchange estimated the costs of resolving the incident and compensating users at $180-400 million. The company created a $20 million prize fund to help find the perpetrators, contacted law enforcement agencies, and handed over the employees who leaked the information to the investigation.
TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington criticized the exchange for its delayed response, saying the KYC data leak could lead to physical threats to customers.
“The human cost is measured in suffering, not money. Companies and regulators stand idly by while KYC systems remain vulnerable,” he said.
In May, Bloomberg reported that Binance and Kraken were able to fend off the same social engineering attacks that hit Coinbase.
