Crypto detective ZachXBT reported suspicious outflows of over $1.46 billion from Bybit accounts. Bybit CEO Ben Zhou soon confirmed the hack.

He stressed that only one wallet was affected, the rest of the funds are in order, and withdrawals remain available.

According to the exchange's official statement, the incident occurred while transferring ETH from cold multisig storage to a hot wallet.

The attackers replaced the transaction signing interface so that all participants in the procedure saw the correct address. At the same time, the logic of the smart contract was changed, and the hackers gained control over the ETH wallet and withdrew all funds to an unidentified wallet.

The team is investigating the attack together with experts and partners. Users were assured that their funds were safe. The platform's operations were not suspended.

According to ZachXBT, unknown individuals have already exchanged some of the stolen mETH and stETH tokens for ETH via decentralized exchanges. 10,000 ETH were divided between 36 wallets. The investigator called on crypto platform operators to block suspicious addresses from the provided list.

DeFi Llama founder 0xngmi noted that the hackers' methods in this attack are similar to the incident with the Indian exchange WazirX, which suffered about $235 million in damage from a hack in July 2024. Then, the attackers also used manipulation of transaction data.
