What you should know:
- Ethereum developers have set May 7 as the target date for the anticipated Pectra upgrade, starting the countdown to the most significant changes to the blockchain since March 2024.
- The decision to schedule Pectra was made at a meeting of Ethereum's core developers, just a week after the upgrade was successfully launched on the Hoodi testnet.
Ethereum developers on Thursday set May 7 as the target date for the anticipated Pectra upgrade, starting the countdown to the most significant changes to the blockchain since March 2024.
Pectra includes a number of improvements aimed at making Ethereum more user-friendly and efficient. One such improvement is the introduction of smart contract capabilities into wallets, which could make them much easier to use and recover.
The decision to schedule Pectra was made during a call between Ethereum's top developers, just over a week after the upgrade was successfully tested on the Hoodi network. Pectra's testing on Hoodi was the third and final test run of the upgrade. The previous two tests revealed bugs that caused the developers to delay the upgrade on the Ethereum mainnet.
Pectra includes 11 key code changes, or “Ethereum Improvement Proposals” (EIPs), that will be released simultaneously. These features collectively aim to improve staking, introduce wallet features, and upgrade the entire network.
One of the major changes to Pectra that will have a positive impact on Ethereum validators is EIP-7251, which will increase the maximum amount of ETH that can be staked from 32 to 2048. This change is intended to make it easier for those staking on multiple validators, as it will now be possible to set it up on a single node instead of multiple nodes.
