Is the US Department of Defense Going to Start Mining Bitcoin? Crypto X Thinks So | INFbusiness

Rumors of a secret Bitcoin (BTC) mining operation within the US Department of Defense began circulating on social media today.

The rumors were sparked by a statement from an employee of BTC ATM service Byte Federal and were supported by Jason Lowry, as well as screenshots of messages from prominent investors such as Michael Saylor, Matthew Pines, and David Bailey hinting at vague, expected “significant” federal events.

Despite the dubious evidence, this unsubstantiated rumor quickly spread, receiving hundreds of thousands of responses.

On March 6, 2025, President Donald Trump established the Bitcoin Strategic Reserve and another digital asset reserve. Neither reserve is tied to mining.

However, Trump has previously supported BTC mining , including during his presidential campaign last summer.

“BTC mining may be our last defense against CBDC. Biden's hatred of BTC only helps China, Russia, and the Radical Communist Left. We want every bitcoin left MINED IN THE USA!!! This will help us become ENERGY INDUSTRIAL!!!” Trump said in June.

Despite government attention to mining as an industry that impacts the environment and energy grid, neither the US Department of Defense nor any other US government agency has officially acknowledged BTC mining.
