“Mr F was here”: which means message in the first block of Ethereum 2.0
Beacon Chain Ethereum 2.0 was launched yesterday, which marked the beginning of a new version of the network and the transition of Ethereum to PoS. In the first block, a mysterious message was left.
The launch of Ethereum 2.0 was held, as planned, at 15:00 Moscow time on December 1. In the first block, after the “genesis” (has a height of 0), a message was left that at first no one understood: “Mr F was here.” The entry was left in the graffiti section of the block, where validators can write their messages. At first, some thought that this message was a reference to the popular television show Slow Development, which was broadcast in the 2000s, since it is the name of the fifth episode of the third season. In the series, no one knows who Mr F is until it turns out that this is a reduction of an inappropriate word on television. However, according to screenshots of the Discord discussion, an anonymous developer called Mr Fahrenheit was honored to create the first Ethereum 2.0 block. According to Trustnodes, before launch, he wrote: “Does this mean that I am in block 0 or 1?”
An anonymous developer of decentralized applications (dApp) took the pseudonym Mr Fahrenheit from Queen’s song “Don’t stop me now.” In January 2019, he led the Tron Shrimp team, which created a decentralized application called Tron Shrimp Farm on the Tron blockchain. According to Trustnodes, Mr Fahrenheit asked what he should write in the first block of Ethereum 2.0.
“I could condemn Bitcoin and compare him with a typewriter,” he suggested.
After the launch of Beacon Chain, Ethereum Foundation developer Hudson Jameson asked Mr Fahrenheit at Discord if the message in the block was a reference to the series “Slow Development.” He replied:
“No. It’s just short for Mr Fahrenheit as in the Queen song. If you look at Vitalik Buterin’s autograph, it’s short for Mr Fahrenheit. “
Then he placed the image of the autograph in question. It is addressed to Mr Fahrenheit and co-founder of Efirium Vitalik Buterin. Vitalik Buterin himself also noted the originality of the message in the first block with a corresponding Twitter entry.
