Ethereum's Pectra Final Test Launches on Hoodi Network

A dress rehearsal for Ethereum's upcoming Pectra upgrade was held on Wednesday, retesting the blockchain's biggest changes in a year after a series of setbacks.

The new Hoodi testnet update has been closely watched given that the previous two tests on the Holesky and Sepolia testnets failed.

Following these tests, the developers created a new Hoodi testnet to provide ecosystem participants, especially staking providers, with an additional opportunity to test before the Pectra upgrade hits the Ethereum mainnet.

Hoodi code changes have been tested that aim to improve the usability of Ethereum for both end users and developers. One of these changes adds smart contract functionality to wallets, allowing wallet software developers to develop new user-friendly features, such as the ability to pay transaction fees in cryptocurrencies other than ether (ETH).

Testnets serve as copies of the main blockchain and are used by developers to test major code changes in a low-stakes environment, giving them the opportunity to fix any bugs before they appear on the main network.

Hoodi was the last of three testnets to run a simulation of Pectra. Developers had previously agreed that if all went well on Wednesday, Pectra would be monitored for about 30 more days before finally being activated on the Ethereum mainnet.
