Key points:

  • Binance initiated a vote among users to choose a token to be delisted from the exchange, and one of these tokens was Zcash.
  • The ZEC token has fallen by 3.1% over the past 24 hours.
  • Some cryptocurrency founders expressed dissatisfaction with Binance's decision.

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance came under fire this week for adding privacy token Zcash (ZEC) to the list of cryptocurrencies that will be voted on for delisting.

Zcash, with a market cap of $500 million, was on the ballot along with FTX's FTT token and data security platform JASMY.

Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox took to Twitter on Tuesday to address Binance CEO Richard Tan: “Are you seriously considering delisting Zcash!? What kind of world are you building? Do you want your kids to grow up in a prosperous world or an episode of Black Mirror?”

Digital Currency Group founder Barry Silbert also posted several messages expressing regret over Binance's decision to include Zcash in the vote.

Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet and Cosmos co-founder Ethan Buchman echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of privacy.

According to Binance, privacy tokens have long been under scrutiny from financial regulators. In 2022, a leaked EU document suggested that privacy tokens could be banned across the region.

The Tornado Cash privacy protocol was also subject to sanctions by the US over concerns about criminal activity, although those sanctions were lifted last month.

ZEC is currently trading at $31.26, down 3.1% over the past 24 hours.
