What you need to know:

  • Tools for Humanity, the company that runs Worldcoin and World Network, sent a request for product form to card issuers, which was reviewed by CoinDesk.
  • Earlier this month, World Network introduced the World Chat app and the ability to send funds in the form of cryptocurrency transactions between network users.

World Network, a blockchain ecosystem designed to improve the functionality of Worldcoin's biometric identification system, is in talks with major payment card player Visa about adding blockchain card functionality to its self-service crypto wallet, according to a source familiar with the plans.

The main goal is to integrate Visa card functionality into World Network wallets, providing a variety of fintech and FX applications, as well as the ability to make fiat and stablecoin payments to thousands of merchants around the world in the Visa network.

Tools for Humanity, which is co-chaired by Open AI CEO Sam Altman and runs Worldcoin and World Network, sent a request for product form to card issuers, which was reviewed by CoinDesk.

World Network is in talks with crypto card developers like Rain, a Coinbase and Circle-backed company that offers blockchain-powered Visa cards for projects like Optimism and Avalanche.

“The plan is to create a whole connected wallet strategy so you can trade all sorts of things from FX to crypto, load to wallet, send to wallet, spend from card,” says a source familiar with the plans. “Basically turn World Wallet into a mini bank account for anyone who wants one.”

The source added that given Altman's resources and overall influence, “other wallet providers should be worried.”

Earlier this month, World Network introduced the World Chat app and the ability to send funds in the form of cryptocurrency transactions between network users.

Worldcoin, an iris-scanning device that collects biometric data for the network, has been the subject of discussion since its launch in 2021.

Major payment processors like Visa and Mastercard are partnering with crypto projects and wallet developers to explore how their vast networks can effectively interact with the world of digital assets.

Tools for Humanity declined to comment. Rain also declined to comment. Visa had not responded by the time of publication.
